'THE VOODOO SOUL' WEAVES HOPE INTO MULTI - GENRE SINGLE, "BREAKTHROUGH'
By: Nadia Sobehart
Based in the Pacific Northwest, The Voodoo Soul—otherwise known as Adam Watson—is a musician and artist set on inspiring listeners through song. His latest single, “Breakthrough,” explores the themes of hope, friendship, and self-belief through a unique blend of trap, hip hop, and R&B—all laced together with a strong electric guitar.
“My style of creating music is stream-of-conscious style writing. I
first get the music portion produced and then freestyle and flow over the song,
some 3-4 times. Then I’ll go back and listen to it. It’s different than sitting
down from the beginning to write about a topic. The song dictates and writes
itself,” shares The Voodoo Soul.
“While I was writing the single, I had the overwhelming feeling of
remembering people that helped me get somewhere,” he adds. “This single is
about honoring that and bringing hope to listeners.”
With influences ranging from Jimi Hendrix to Jay Z, it comes as no
surprise that The Voodoo Soul has a style of his own. Traditionally, the
musician focused on guitar and songwriting. He began playing guitar at age 12
on a fishing boat with a friend. It wasn’t until the pandemic hit that he began
exploring production, music theory, recording, and adding a fuller range of
instruments to his sound.
The Voodoo Soul specializes in storytelling, from the little moments
in life (like getting stuck at a Greyhound station) to introspective thoughts.
He is driven by helping others achieve their goals and seeks to bring hope
through his music. “I think I always want people to gain mindfulness in
anything I write or tell a story about. Introspection and hope, whatever
propels us forward. Those are the elements I want to incorporate in my music,”
tells The Voodoo Soul.
“For a while, I was producing all the parts of my songs—the beat,
drums, bass. It’s only recently that I started to reach out for beats and
collaborate with other producers and artists. I was all on my own for a while,
but it’s fun to share that energy with other artists,” tells The Voodoo Soul of
his writing process. “I focus a lot on the writing. Sometimes I write five,
six, ten songs a day—whole flows to beats. Other times I’ll find things I like
here and there and resample or rerecord them (after getting the rights).”
Up next, The Voodoo Soul will be releasing a hip-hop, trap-style
single featuring the acoustic guitar. For now, he is focused on “Breakthrough,”
and sharing his unique musical style with listeners all over the world.
“I’m a real believer in following your heart and working as hard as
you can,” shares the artist. “You don’t have to be the most talented person in
the room, but you can be the hardest working one. Don’t give up—always
persevere. And to my musician friends—get your bad songs out of the way at the
beginning,” he adds. “What I put into music is more than chasing the end—it’s
about the in-between and enjoying the journey.”
