Bat Lanyard—the duo comprised of life-long collaborators Matt Thompson and Nick Davis—releases their long-anticipated self-titled album, Bat Lanyard. The 10-track record is a culmination of years of back-and-forth collaboration across state lines and multiple genres. Featuring “Burned Out Lovers,” “Know Your Name,” and “Yellow Paper,” the debut album is guaranteed to leave listeners with a favorite new song.

“Our new album is a journey,” tells Matt Thompson, the engineer and producer behind the album. “It takes you a lot of places.” Nick Davis, sharing the roles of writer, guitarist, vocalist, and keyboardist with Matt, adds, “Our music is dream pop rock.”

Bat Lanyard delivers songs that are both reminiscent of music you once loved and refreshing all the same. The musical stylings of the album tiptoe across genres including soft rock, electronica, dream pop, and metal alternative pop. “Indie alternative rock is a bit narrow for the things we like,” shares the band. “Bat Lanyard is melancholy sonic, open-minded frustration, and love.”

“Burned Out Lovers,” the second song on the record, is known for its catchiness and soundscape. “It says a lot about what our style is and what we put into music—whether it’s keys or guitar. It’s the perfect combination of our styles blended into one song. It was hard to choose a single because every time we had an idea of what we thought should be the single, we realized that different people like different songs on the album for their own reasons.”

“We wanted the album to have a certain flow and a bit of a sonic story written in a particular order that takes you through ups and downs. The album tells a story with different moods and feelings throughout.”

In their college days, the duo played together in a variety of cover and original alternative rock bands, playing at local clubs and parties. They also put out a six-song EP, “Big Oak.” After their time in Oklahoma, Matt went on to front the Dallas, Texas-based band, Quickserv Johnny, coming out with two albums on Rainmaker Records and touring the area.

Nick and Matt continued collaborating at a distance and occasionally reunited to play local shows with band Fred Scott. They eventually came together as Bat Lanyard and consolidated efforts to create the self-titled album, Bat Lanyard.

“We’ve known each other for a while and working together on and off we’ve come to appreciate each other’s musical talents and what we can do. We were in a college band together, but it’s really these last few years collaborating on songs that have solidified our friendship. We have mutual respect for each other’s talents.”

It is the merging of unique skillsets that makes Nick and Matt a strong duo. “Matt is a great musician and songwriter yet was able to get into production at a high level and is really good at it. That has allowed us to build.”

“Nick writes the majority of the lyrics and has the ability to say something simple with depth and meaning to it that’s really hard to do in songwriting,” shares Matt of their creative process. “There are a ton of songs out there that are none of that. Our music means different things to different people.”

Bat Lanyard has been writing music across state lines by collaborating asynchronously. “Our process has evolved and gotten more intensive as we learned things about our song process. We haven’t lived in the same place since college, but thanks to technology, we’ve been able to share tracks virtually.”

“I’ll write something and throw it to Matt, and he’ll add a lyric or melody change or cool part. Back and forth, it becomes a song,” explains Nick. The two convene at times at Matt’s studio for a multiple-day recording session, where they agree in advance which songs to knock out during that period. “We build the songs out organically. If a song doesn’t get there during that time, we drop it.”

Coming up next for Bat Lanyard is a series of new songs under development, including many that didn’t make it onto the first album. The duo is also planning some live performances later this year.

This autumn, Bat Lanyard also looks forward to celebrating the release of their record with a party in Dallas. “We’ve been really happy with the feedback we’ve gotten so far. People are really supportive of our album.”

By: Nadia Sobehart

Gospel singer and songwriter, Joyous Lola, releases “We Worship You,” a song of praise and celebration. The single gives listeners a robust musical experience through thoughtful lyrics, strong vocals, and a live instrumental band.

“The song was given to me by God. This song was written to inspire people that God is good, no matter what. Everyone can praise him, no matter what circumstances they live with,” shares Joyous Lola of the meaning behind her recent single. “I want to encourage listeners to praise and worship God. It’s meant to remind us of how good God is.”

Joyous Lola looks within when she creates her music. “I have a team I work with for the instrumental side, and, in terms of lyrics, my entire song and lyrics are inspired by the Holy Spirit—they are not just based on my own intellect or experiences. I get my inspiration from the Holy Spirit.”

The music video for “We Worship You” is a captivating performance for listeners of all ages and beliefs. While Joyous Lola’s music falls under Christian music, her songs—particularly this single—are influenced by smooth jazz, R&B, and Gospel. Joyous Lola’s sound is authentic and powerful—and capable of spreading an important message in a handful of minutes and words.

While Joyous Lola appears to have been born for the spotlight, her childhood dreams were not of becoming an artist. “I was always in church choirs where I grew up—but I wasn’t looking to be a singer. My singing as an artist comes from my encounters with Jesus and everything I’ve been through—my calling,” shares Joyous Lola. It was through the mercies of God and divine intervention that Joyous Lola found herself singing God’s praises to her listeners.

“I came to America as a teenager—I’m originally Nigerian,” tells the artist. “Now, I sing and I’m also in the medical industry as a registered nurse.” Joyous Lola’s passion for helping and inspiring others goes beyond the medical field and into the realm of music.

“We Worship You” comes on the heels of Joyous Lola’s previous single, “Amazing Love,” which is about the love of Jesus. In the coming months, she plans to release more music. Joyous Lola also looks forward to performing to live audiences.

THE LAWBREAKERS STOP BY AND TALK ABOUT THEIR NEW PROJECTS "WORLD DOMINATION" AND "GROUND ZERO" AND MORE!

Law Breakers come back to make a push for their “fundamental,” high-energy style of hip hop

THE INFAMOUS CRACKHEAD - THE LAWBREAKERS (24:48)

By Kurt Beyers

After a layoff of around nine years, The Infamous Crackhead, also known as Damian Wheeler, and the revived Law Breakers are back with two albums featuring their unique brand of hip hop.

“Girls Everywhere,” a charged, jazzy hip hop party track about women and Damian’s love and respect for them, is the featured release from World Domination.

“It’s not on the nasty side, where much of music has been going, you know? It’s something that represents the love that I have for women. It’s just an all around, good-feeling vibe,” he said. A video is in the works.

The two albums, Ground Zero is the other, “are an eclectic mix of different vibes,” said Damian.

World Domination has some conscience and some street tracks that have different things. Ground Zero is an album of growth, a mix of stuff that makes you think about things.” The contrast he draws between his music and others is between “fundamental rap” and “destruction rap.”

Ground Zero is basically about different things, different goals and different avenues of people. It can take you on a ride, if you want to be taken on a ride.”

The tracks showcase a group of skilled, talented hip hop artists who clearly enjoy themselves in creating and recording their work. The beats are trippy and fast, the rap clear and forceful. The explicit parts are in some of the words themselves attitudes toward people. Institutions, yes, like governments and war in the track “World Domination.”

The group’s lyrics are full of ideas about people — the way they live, the things they do — love, class, race, space and many other things.

“I’ve never been the type of guy that follows everyday trends and stuff like that. Trends and fads fade away. I try to have fun with the music. I’m not trying to be labeled as something, I want to just be an artist and bring back fun and lyrics, and also bring some realism. Music is universal, something that’s going to get into your soul if you just let it be.”

Damian (The Infamous Crackhead) and The Law Breakers are reconstituted from several earlier versions, beginning almost 20 years ago with a 12-member group called “Speakers of the House.”

He was the DJ and beat maker, and that was where he got the Infamous Crackhead name, not because he did the drug but because he was so hyper on, behind and off stage. He liked it and it stuck. He has been DJing and making music since, though he is only now making a determined push to promote the music of The Law Breakers.

He cites the DJ experience as a big factor in the variety. His work is in the hip hop genre, or alternative hip hop, and hardcore, he says, but “My background is so diverse because I’m a DJ, so when you hear my music, you’re going to hear rock, you’re going to hear jazz, you’re going to hear blues, you're going to hear country, you’re going to hear so many different sounds.”

Life on the streets took its toll, “casualties of war,” says Damian, and most of the early group members are gone now. The current Law Breakers are The Infamous Crackhead; his partners Chronic Kid, Joe Black and brother Joe Slick; his godbrother, The Minister; and a cousin, P Storm.

His nine years away from music was spent mainly caring for his father, who passed away about nine months ago, but he never lost the dream of music. His father’s dying words to him, he said, were, “Don’t give up, Son. Go for it all.”

He credits his parents, Clarence E. Wheeler Jr. and his mother, who is still with him, Jean H. Wheeler, for their encouragement and support.

The tracks on World Domination and Ground Zero are music he has had out for a couple of years, but it is music that he is only now able to promote, with the nine-year layoff and the interruptions of the pandemic years. But he has a wealth of material ready to go.

Lost in the Concrete Jungle, which he plans to drop in June, will be new, unreleased songs. He will release a single from that album, “Rat.” Beyond that, he has enough material for several more albums.

R&B RECORDING ARTIST 'WILL PRESTON' STOPS BY THE SHOW AND TALKS UP HIS NEW SINGLE "OF COURSE I LIED" PLUS MUCH MORE!

“Of Course I Lied” is the latest stop on Will Preston’s journey through R&B

Listen to the Podcast BELOW!

WILL PRESTON "OF COURSE I LIED" (27:22)

Download the MP3

By Kurt Beyers

“Of Course I Lied,” Will Preston’s new R&B single, continues his special brand of R&B storytelling with a soft, soulful story of the end of a love.

“I think love is multifaceted, and people go through painful times,” he said. “Sometimes you’re the one leaving, sometimes you’re the one stuck on the other end.”

“Of Course I Lied” is told by the man, but the lyrics tell of pain on both sides. “Of course I lied” he sings to his lover in the chorus. “I mean for real / Did you think I was just gonna tell you the truth,” and later, the pain is on the other side, “My silent cries, you chose to ignore.”

“When you think about love songs, obviously we think about when it feels good, and when everything is great. But there's a very realistic side of love that exists also.”

One of his gifts, in addition to his voice and his command of it, is his lyrics. His songs tell stories, and the story grows out of the melody.

“One of the things that I focus on when I’m writing is telling a story,” he said. “I really get into melody, but even more for me is the story behind it. I want the people listening to the song to ride with me all through that song.”

He develops his own melodies, and sometimes his songs start there. Sometimes, people submit tracks, and he gets inspired and writes to them. On at least one occasion, both came to him at the same time. The song, “Phone Don’t Ring,” was on his last album, Where Do I Begin, in 2020.

A piano intro bubbles like water in a mountain spring. Then the beat kicks in, and he sings, “Phone don’t ring / Please don’t ring … Every time I look down / My phone starts to ring / But it’s not your name / Coming across my screen.”

“I literally woke up in the middle of the night with that melody and those lyrics. I had to get up to write it all down. That was just one of those times.”

Sometimes, a melody hits him when he’s walking around, triggered by something he saw or heard, and he hums the tune to remember it until he can write it down.

“So, I’m walking and I’m humming, and I’m trying to be quiet enough so that people around me aren’t thinking, ‘What’s going on with that guy?’”

He goes through periods when he doesn’t release any projects. His first album, It’s My Will, was in 2005. Caught in the Act — The LIVE Experience came out in 2007. In 2013, he released #reacquainted, and in 2020 he released Where Do I Begin.

He is an entrepreneur, and he has other things that demand his time and focus, like real estate interests in Atlanta, where he lives. He is also a partner and part owner in a cosmetic arts college.

“All those things pull me in different directions at times, but music is something that I’m always focused on.”

He is constantly looking to broaden his base of listeners. His base grows with each release. “I really enjoy the kind of organic growth I’ve experienced.”

When he connects with people, he often hears, “Wow! Where have you been?” His response is, “Well, it’s the tricks of the big boys at the big stations. They don’t always play us indie artists.”

Another thing he hears is, “R&B is dead. Or dying.”

“And I’m always out there screaming ‘No! No it’s not!’ You just have to look a little harder for us and dig a little deeper.”

“I really want to appeal to those listeners who are craving that good R&B that they feel is missing in today’s music.”

He is working on more songs and plans to release an album around October. He says he has about three things he is working on at any given time. While working on a song, something comes up that he wants to get down so that he doesn’t forget, and, eventually, “It comes together for me.”

He prefers putting out albums to singles.

“I’m more interested in the long-term impact and sustainability of my career,” he said. “I want people to be able to look back and see that I have a catalogue of music that they can listen to and take a nice journey back through my albums.”

To go on the musical journey with him, stay connected to Will Preston on all platforms for new music, videos, and social posts.
