UPPER SADDLE RIVER, NJ - Independent artist Nikill is coming on strong with his latest single, “Stubborn,” a fusion of alternative hip hop and lo-fi style that forms the perfect emo sound.

“I have a dark sense of humor, and I am able to put my feelings into song,” said Nikill. “My lyrics and the way I talk is about what I’ve been through - abuse and bad relationships.”

Nikill is a rising emo artist who loads his music with haunting lyrics about broken relationships, trust issues, abuse, and being different. “Stubborn” represents the best of Nikill to this point in his career.

Featuring hardcore rapper Playtrixxx, “Stubborn” describes how Nikill is different from everyone else, and in fact, he is very stubborn. As the song concludes, the message is clear: he will make it, and the girl he sings about only wants him for what he can do. There is no love in the relationship.

“I listen to music every single day, and I want to be different,” said Nikill. “I put that bet on myself, and I am different. I combined all my role models and devised my sound.”

The addition of Playtrixxx on the track gives it credibility and boosts Nikill’s delivery. Citing Playtrixxx as a mentor, Nikill explained recording “Stubborn” was an emotional ride. “I remember all my songs because I practiced them before recording. There’s no filter, and I put all my emotions out. That’s when you are brutally honest - with the lyrics.”

Listening to Nikill’s music becomes an obsession, from the hook that hits like a brain worm to the flow and pitch that gets in your soul. For Nikill, music saved his life - and now, he is sharing it with the world. “When I was 18, I felt so depressed and didn’t want to live. The only way I could deal with it was through my music,” he said. “Now the haters are now telling me to keep going.”

Using minimal autotune when recording, Nikill layers his voice with vocals to create his style, which is singing mixed with rap. “Stubborn” has a rap song’s lyrical aspects and beat, yet it is not rap. “Stubborn” is in its own genre - emo.

Using the name “Nikill” because he “kills” the beat, the New Jersey native knows he is paving the way for other emo artists, but, more importantly, Nikill conveys his emotions in every song. As his discography grows, so does his musical maturity. “I’m not making music for everyone,” he said. “I’m making music for people who have been through abuse and have no hope. I am the inspiration for them to keep going.”

Nikill acknowledges his music talks explicitly to people who are intoxicated or high. Looking ahead to his EP, “Regrets in da Air,” which will drop near the end of February, Nikill said, “Whole album is a drug-laced rap. I’m f*cked up, and I don’t know what’s happening. We are talking about doing weed or alcohol and putting our emotions in the songs.”

As a rising emo artist, Nikill offers advice to anyone struggling as he did at a young age, “You can do anything you set your mind to. If you have your own style, if you can learn from role models, you can make your own lane.”

With a drug-laced voice singing about the depressing aspects of our lives, Nikill’s “Stubborn” is a beautiful surreal journey.
