Never for one second did I ever imagine I would be going through the type of stress I am going through in the sport of boxing. I have been attacked in the worst possible way. As a woman I feel as if I have it ten times harder than any man. From dealing with male advancements, rumors, stress on personal relationships to physical abuse, I feel as if it is almost just not worth it. However I find myself pushing forward simply for one thing and one thing only; the love of the sport. I am a woman with a passion for a male dominated sport.
When I decided to get into management about four years ago I consulted with Jackie Kallen for some advice. She simply told me to be strong and never do anything without a contract. She warned me of what would go down and it all came to pass. Many fighters I worked with were not excited about a female representing them. I found out that I would have to prove myself before I would be able to earn their trust.
I take pride in doing something that most men in the sport of boxing loath the idea of a woman doing. Currently I work for Gary Shaw Productions as well as running a gym in Las Vegas, NV called The H.I.T. Factory. Both have had their share of drama, but all in all they have both felt like home to me simply because of the loyalty and support that has been shown.
Surely it is difficult for women in any male dominated sport, however boxing is a beast in its own right.
Women are defiantly a force in boxing. You may not know it because we are behind the scenes, but we are there.
Jakie Kallen opened doors and made history by doing things her way. So much so, that Hollywood made a movie about her. Kathy Duva is still one of the best promoters in the game. Currently, she is assisting Zab Judah into the domination of the junior welterweight division. Kelly Swanson is one of the top PRs in boxing. She defiantly sets the bar. Monica Sears came on the GBP scene with a bang. Congratulations on the new promotion Monica! Marylin Aceves has been carrying the Goossen Tutor and Thompson Boxing PR title for some time now and is always a pleasure to work with. The list goes on and on and I am positive that we have all endured the same amount of scrutiny.
Not to mention the thousands of women who fight and train just as hard as the men in boxing. My hat is off to every woman who steps into the ring and fights to make a change in the sport. Women are not boxing for the money. They are simply doing it for the love of the sport. Hopefully the 2012 Olympics will shed a light on Women’s Boxing.
It is time to accept the fact that women are defiantly a major part of boxing. We didn’t have to sell ourselves or sleep with anyone to get where we are in the sport. We simply stayed strong and pursued a dream. Any woman who has made it in this sport is a champion in her own right. Good luck to all of my sisters in the sport. You are all champions…
