PAPA ROACH - THE MAN BEHIND MANNY PACQUIAO By Dennis Guillermo
Papa Roach: The Man behind Manny Pacquiao
Article By
Dennis Anthony F. Guillermo
Manny Pacquiao is on the brink of becoming an international household name. Finding a genuine boxing fan that hasn’t at the very least heard of his name is like finding a Filipino who has never been to a karaoke party. After bursting in the American boxing scene in 2001 by beating the then-IBF Super Bantamweight champion Lehlohonolo Ledwaba, the once unknown jumping jellybean of a bantamweight has climbed 4 weight classes from bantamweight to lightweight and has amassed belts in 5 different divisions overall in his career. However, after 14 wins, 3 conquered Mexican legends, a few more tough Mexicans, a few movies, a couple of music albums, 80 something commercials, 1 political loss and about 100 different managers, lawyers, political hangers-on, leeches and Team Pacquiao members, one thing has never changed: his trainer Freddie Roach.
When Manny first came to America and knocked on the boxing gyms looking for someone to take him in, he received the cold shoulder most Filipinos before him got from trying to crack into the American boxing scene. Let’s be real, there was little to no interest from this side of the globe for professional boxers coming from that other side of the globe. You just didn’t see too many Asians, especially Filipino boxers fighting out here back then. For whatever reason, that was the case. Manny saw more shut doors than the Jehovah’s Witnesses… well maybe not more but you know what I mean. But one fateful day, Manny walked inside the now hallowed doors of 1123 Vine Street in Hollywood- address of what is more known to the boxing world as the gym of the Wild Card Boxing Club- and the rest is history. I guess it’s just as they say. “If you want to be a star, come to Hollywood.”
It was supposedly Manny’s second to the last stop before he goes back to Manila and bid his American dreams goodbye. It’s then when Freddie Roach first saw Manny Pacquiao’s potential. He must’ve seen something that the rest did not have, for him to want to take on trainer number one, two, six and thirty six’s sloppy seconds. He saw a diamond in the rough. He gave the unknown kid from General Santos city Philippines a home. And now General Paulino Santos must be rolling in his grave in fears of his name getting permanently deleted from the map of the Philippines because we all know that General Santos City, Philippines is really Manny Pacquiao City, Philippines.
From that point on, Freddie and Manny built a solid trainer-boxer relationship. Manny worked his tail off from day one, and Freddie responded by sharing and giving his all to help the boy reach his potential. And boy did he reach and surpass his potential! Can you imagine now, how things would’ve been without a Manny Pacquiao? C’mon, I challenge you. Think about it. What if Freddie Roach overslept that day or got his car towed or something and that meeting never happened? I’m pretty sure Juan Manuel Marquez has thought of a world without a Manny Pacquiao a few times before but let’s get real. I know Halloween is coming up but do I really have to put on my Larry Merchant costume to stress out how big of an impact Manny Pacquiao has made for the sport of boxing? He singlehandedly resuscitated a sport gasping for air. He not only kicked the door open for Filipinos and Asian boxers alike, he also helped reacquaint the boxing public to the lower weight classes- not to mention spawning a newfound passionate boxing fan base that is the Filipino boxing fans. (His website Pacland is probably the most active boxing forums website in the web).
Just as the legendary Larry said it himself, “If there was a Manny Pacquiao in every division in boxing, the world would be a better place. We’d have peace in the Middle East.”
And fact of the matter is, there wouldn’t be a Manny Pacquiao, if there wasn’t a Freddie Roach. Freddie took an unwanted, unknown kid and thrived on his work ethic and potential and saw it through to the end. Even to this day, it’s no secret that Freddie considers Manny his favorite fighter ever and even went as far as saying he attributes his potential Hall of Fame career as trainer to Manny. However, Manny isn’t just any other teacher’s pet. Freddie and Manny are like brothers, father and son even to a certain extent. It’s common practice that trainers stay away from their fighter’s business transactions with promoters, but Freddie has stuck his neck out for Manny many times before. He was the one who pushed Manny and helped him get out of a bad contract from Murad Muhammad. And just last year, when Manny’s personal life was starting to seem out of control and affect his boxing career, Freddie flew all the way to Manila during the Christmas season to help his ward get back on track.
We are talking about a guy who’s trained Mike Tyson, James Toney, Oscar De la Hoya, among others, and was voted as Trainer of the Year by the Boxing Writers Association of America in 2003, 2006 and 2007. Dedham Freddie as some call him, who was born and raised in Dedham, Massachusetts, has handled the best of the best. If he decided to walk away on Pacquiao during the latter’s struggling times, I don’t really see how it could blemish what he’s already accomplished in the boxing game. But Freddie stuck with Manny, just like how a good father sticks with his troubled son. Freddie and Manny may be different people with totally different personalities- as Freddie has shown he does not mind talking trash with opponents, while Manny does his talking in the ring. But one thing these two men share, and something fair weathered fans or cheating spouses can never comprehend, is loyalty. Manny knows he has somebody he can trust and who would do anything just to help him succeed. Freddie has Manny’s best interests.
For his next fight versus De la Hoya, Freddie even offered to waive his pay if Manny ends up losing, just to prove a point that it’s Manny’s legacy that he is interested in building up and not his personal bank account. It’s often overlooked, but just ask Miguel Cotto how much it sucks to have a trainer you don’t even really like. You can’t put a prize on having somebody be it your dad, role model, trainer, a coach for that matter in any sport, that believes in you, helps you and pushes you to achieve more than even you yourself sometimes thought you could never reach. And did I already tell you that this guy is a great tactician and trainer too? See Pacquiao’s right hooks against Diaz. You get the point.
Manny knows why he’s here. He has stated time and again, he will never work with a different trainer ‘til the day he retires. Yes, all of his fans and supporters have helped him get there too. He knows. Among all of Manny’s positive traits, Manny is a smart person. He knows damn well, if it wasn’t for a fellow named Freddie Roach, he might’ve well ended up just like past fallen Filipino champions as boxing footnotes.

D-SOURCE TAKES A LOOK AT FREDDIE ROACH - By Dennis Guillermo

"If you're a slow dog, be careful."--Roach
By: Dennis Anthony Guillermo
www.boxingherlad.com
If you saw ESPN's E:60 feature on Manny Pacquiao titled "Thrilla" Tuesday night, you probably know what I am talking about. Freddie Roach is quite the scene stealer- in a good way. Fresh from pulling a toy gun in their San Francisco press conference a couple of weeks ago, Freddie was back at his quick witted best. The topic was how Manny started as a boxer. Freddie said.
"First story I heard was Manny ran away from home because his dad ate his dog. That's just how poor it is in General Santos. If you're a slow dog, be careful."
LMFAO. To say it succinctly.
David Letterman could not have said it any better. I'm sure Freddie could easily be a stand-up comic or a comedy writer in another life. HOWEVER- and I meant to put it in all caps- this same quick witted line has some Jedi mind trick type of message about Pacquiao's upcoming fight against Oscar De la Hoya to it. Well at least to me it does. "If you're a slow dog, be careful." Yes Oscar De la Hoya, if you come in as a slow dog against Pacquiao, he will make azucena of you and eat you inside the bright lights of MGM grand.
(Oh, by the way, thank you Freddie for maintaining the stereotype that Filipinos eat dogs on primetime TV. Like I need a few more of my white and latino friends tell me they're not letting their dogs anywhere near me. Filipinos don't eat dogs. Just like how Americans don't eat squirrels. There may be some folks from the south that do but that don't make up a whole country. Trust me, you won't see dog chops and barbecued Chihuahuas on any fast food menu in the Philippines. Wink, wink. But for real though…)
Reports from the Pacquiao camp have all been positive. Everybody from Bob Arum to Joe the plumber have been raving about Pacquiao's training and how he's actually bulked up without losing his legendary speed. On the flip side, little has been published about De la Hoya's training camp from Big Bear California. For all we know Oscar may have very well just hired Usain Bolt to help him with his speed training. Speed kills. And like most, I believe speed will be the determining factor on December 6. If Oscar can keep up with Manny, Manny is in for a tough night. But if Oscar shows his age that night, I can't see how the fight can't end the way Pacquiao-Diaz did last June. Granted Oscar can pack the harder punch, but in the words of NBA great Kevin Johnson. "You can't beat what you can't catch."
Overall, I enjoyed ESPN's E:60 episode on Manny. If you watched the full version of the roundtable discussion over at ESPN's website you will notice how Jeremy Schaap crammed all the information he can about Manny in their discussion and at the end of the day, I give him props for doing a credible job in trying to capture Manny's persona. Michael Smith couldn't have been any more condescending *ehem ehem* douche bag *ehem ehem* even if he tried, but I guess it just speaks volumes about how the general public views boxing these days. When asked about what Manny accomplishes for taking a fight with De la Hoya, Schaap failed to point out though that Manny is stepping in the ring with a man way bigger than him. It's hard to overstate how big a challenge this is for Manny's career. Just ask all the naysayers and read up on all the reports that have pretty much dismissed this fight as an absolute mismatch. This is the type of fight the sport can market towards the Rocky underdog lovers out there.
Coming from an avid boxing fan, it's funny and sad at the same time, how clueless really a lot of people are about the game today. And it goes back to the very reason why I think it's wrong to say this fight is bad for boxing. Boxing needs all the publicity it could get right now. Thankfully, we are seeing current fighters on ESPN primetime again, albeit be once in a blue moon. Any real boxing fan that cares for the overall betterment of the sport should be rooting for this fight. It's our symbolic token presentation to the mainstream world that boxing still exists. Regardless of the result, we should all be pulling for a great match-up that can finally put boxing back on the map and generate more interest from the general public. Big fights like this are what inspire future Mike Tysons, Oscar De la Hoyas and Manny Pacquiaos just like how a game 7 on TNT between the Lakers and the Celtics inspire future Kobe Bryants and Kevin Garnetts. Didn't everybody say the New York Giants were going to be brutally murdered by the New England Patriots in the Superbowl last season? We all know how that went.
And I'm not saying Pacquiao should beat De la Hoya for the sport to get something out of this fight, but shame, let them play the games. To shoot it down and ridicule it before the fight even happens hurts the sport more than any of the reasons the same people say about how the fight is bad for boxing. That's why they play the games, and that's why you see underdogs beat favorites all the time in any sport. The most important fact in this matter is that this fight has the biggest appeal out of any other fight out there right now. Appeal, not in terms of boxing purists, stuck-ups, snubs and whatever ever have you. Appeal in terms of the general public and worldwide interest. Why shoot that down? Point blank period, when we get more bouts like this, boxing wins.

JOE THE PLUMMER AND PALIN'S WARDROBE

Here's an interesting newsflash. JOE THE PLUMMERS house is worth less than what the RNC gave Sarah Palin for her wardrobe. The RNC gave Sarah Palin 150,000 bucks for her clothes. So, the next time you hear John McCain spewing his garbage about how Obama's tax plan will destroy JOE THE PLUMMER, remember that 150,000 bucks that the RNC gave to his running mate to make her look pretty.

OBAMA ENDORSED BY THE BIG MAN ON CAMPUS

One of the most respected, decorated, American generals in United States history says that he will vote for Barak Obama for president. General Colin Powell on Meet The Press this morning, made it very clear that he has thrown his support behind Barak Obama. Powell says, "Obama dives deep into issues with a steady hand."
The retired general made it clear that he was not very happy with how Senator McCain's campaign tried to tie Obama to domestic terrorism (Bill Ayers), and how he handled the current economic crisis. Powell also isn't real happy with how McCain is trying to make Obama look like a "Socialist" additionally, Powell blasted in his own way, Sarah Palin. Powell said that Palin has not shown that she would be ready to assume the presidency if something were to happen.
Powell also did not rule in or out the possibility of serving on an Obama administration saying, "If I were asked by any sitting president, I would of course have to listen to what they had to say."
Just a few more weeks folks and hopefully, if all goes well our country can begin what will be a long healing process.

PAVLIK EXECUTED B HOP STYLE By Brad Cooney

The old man took the youngster from Youngstown to school. That's pretty much it, in a nutshell. Bernard "The Executioner" Hopkins took the middleweight world champion, Kelly Pavlik and simply mopped up the ring with him.
Hopkins got off first, and he got off first all night. Quicker hands? Yes, quicker hands and much better movement proved to be all the ingredience needed for the 43 year old Bernard Hopkins to deliver Pavlik the first loss of his professional career.
I scored it a complete shutout for Hopkins. The judges were a little bit more generous than I was, and gave Pavlik a few rounds here and there. But, it was pretty much a clean sweep shutout for Hopkins. Hopkins after the fight was very respectful to Pavlik, telling him that at 160 lbs he would be unbeatable.
The win was very impressive, and love him or hate him, Bernard Hopkins made a lot of people eat crow this evening. Me being one of them!

COONEY MUSIC FLASHBACK - REVIEW - IAN MOORE

Back in the early 90's when I made my arrival in the great state of Texas, there was this young, skinny, long haired guitar prodigy that would pack the clubs up and down 6th street In Austin, on any given weekend. His vocal range alone would make the hair stand up on your arms, and then mix in his God's given talent on the six string, and man, yea... you got IAN MOORE.
His self titled album IAN MOORE was released in 1993, and he quickly gained the attention of the music circuit throughout Texas. It wouldn't take too long for Moore to gain national attention with the release of his hit single, "Muddy Jesus" a song that mixes his melodic voice and his electrifying guitar playing.
Currently, Moore resides in the Seattle Washington area, and continues to put out the music. His more recent material is more of a folk style, nothing like his 90's stuff. Back in the 90's, when you heard an Ian Moore track, you was hearing a combination of Stevie Ray Vaughn, and Charlie Sexton.
If you have never heard an Ian Moore track, than I highly suggest you grab a copy of the 1993 release IAN MOORE.

OBAMA OPENS UP 11 POINT LEAD OVER MCCAIN

Barak Obama according to a new Newsweek tracking poll has opened up an 11 point lead over Senator John McCain. Recent attacks initiated by Vice Presidential candidate, Gov Sarah Palin, that attempt to tie Obama with a domestic terrorist, (Bill Aires) have not worked. In fact, it seems to have had a backlash effect making many voters angry, thus increasing Obama's lead. McCain's own supporters booed him at a town hall meeting yesterday when McCain tried to put the brakes on his supporters overly aggressive behavior. McCain supporters can be heard yelling, "Terrorist" and "Bomb Obama", creating a situation where McCain had no choice but to attempt to simmer down his supporters in fear that the backlash nationally will be unfixable.
At this point in our nations history, NOBODY with any brains is buying these ridiculous attacks by the McCain campaign. It's typical old politics, when you can't win on the issues, try to attack, and drag your opponent down. This is clearly what the McCain camp is attempting.
Palin continues to spew her garbage day after day, trying to tie in Obama with Bill Aires, coming close to calling Obama a domestic terrorist supporter. A recent report from the state of Alaska has said that Palin had misused her power as Governor by firing an Alaskan state trooper. I am guessing that with this new report, Palin will not brag about her supposed Governing decision making.
28 days to go, and the people will go to the polls, an America, God willing will have a new leader, and a change in direction.

MOVIE REVIEW - DID I STAY AWAKE FOR EVIL AWAKENING? By Brad Cooney

I decided to take a look at the horror movie EVIL AWAKENING for a few reasons. Firstly, the director, Geno McGahee used to be a guy that I respected. That's right, I said "used" to. I do not respect, nor do I like the guy, however I am a guy that will put personal feelings aside, and give the movie a fair shake.
Truthfully, when I pushed play, I went into this flick with the intention of bashing it to pieces. But, I decided (unlike someone I know) to be a man about this, and keep an open mind about it.
If you're looking for a quality horror film such as Nightmare on Elm Street, or Halloween, you won't find it in Evil Awakening. Obviously budget or lack thereof was an issue with this one. BUT, with basically zero money to work with, I give the guy his props for putting together a cool story. Was I scared? Ummmmm, no I wasn't scared. However, I was somewhat impressed with the fact that the guy had a vision, and with no money for the project, he got the movie done.
I have seen horror films that had 20 times more budget and looked cheaper than this flick. So without giving away the story line, I'll leave it like this. If you want to drop 17 bones at a bar and risk driving home under the influence, I have a better idea, spend the cash on Evil Awakening and watch a horror flick that didn't suck.

McCain't TELL THE TRUTH LAUNCHES NEGATIVE SMEAR ATTACKS

As the country see's it's lowest stock market since 2004, jobs declining rapidly, and the deficit so high that I don't even think I know how to write it, McCain wants to dig up nasty rumors, and bash Obama about things of many years ago? I guess when your campaign is being defeated on REAL ISSUES, you have no choice but to go negative?
Obama's poll numbers show that he's increasing his lead every day. The battle ground states are all leaning more and more in Obama's favor as well. It doesn't take a rocket scientist to figure out why. THE ECONOMY STUPID! BUT, McCain doesn't want to talk about the economy does he? NOOOO he wants to talk about Rev Wright, and his hair raising annoying ass running mate, Palin has the audacity to spew her garbage with attacks implying Barak runs around with domestic terrorists?
In 29 days it will be over, and I won't have to sit and watch an old cranky has been Senator (I respect his service to our country) and his bafoon running mate anymore. Obama should win this thing going away, and with God's will our nation will recover, and regain the prosperity, and power that we once had.
The Bush administration will be no more, and the Obama administration will be born. With God's will President Obama will restore what was once a respect held by most of the world towards America. 29 MORE DAYS AND COUNTING.

VIDEO OF JUAN GUZMAN NOT MAKING THE WEIGHT
I found my DVD that had the Guzman weigh in on it. A little late, but in case you wanted to take a look at him failing to make the weight on the scales, here it is.
O.J. SIMPSON - HOW STUPID IS THIS GUY?

How stupid is O.J. Simpson? This moron gets away with murder 13 years ago, and ends up in prison anyway 13 years to the day later. I mean look, if I ever killed somebody and then I was offered freedom for my efforts, I would be working in a church 6 days a week, and working in a soup kitchen on the seventh day, feeding the homeless. I mean, I just can't get over how stupid this guy is.
Simpson was convicted on all 12 counts, including the biggies, the felony counts of armed roberry, and armed kidnapping. Each of those two charges have 15 year minimums. So if the judge were to give the most lenient sentence per those two charges, "The Juice" is looking at 30 years. That would make him 91 when he gets out, or is eligible for parole.
This guy's ego and his I AM ABOVE THE LAW attitude has landed him EXACTLY where his sorry ass belongs. IN THE SLAMMER! Have a nice life murderer.
SLICED AND DICED INTO AN MMA REALITY CHECK - SLICE KNOCKED OUT IN 14 SECONDS

KIMBO BEAT DOWN AND SLICED INTO AN MMA REALITY CHECK
By Brad Cooney
Some may ask, “ Who is Seth Petruzelli?” If you haven't heard of him before yesterday, there's a pretty good chance that you will have heard of him today. It took all of 14 seconds for the last minute replacement brawler to expose the overly hyped You Tube backyard bully as, well.... an overly hyped backyard bully.
Petruzelli stepped up to the plate at the last minute to replace the MMA legend, Ken Shamrock. An eye injury during the pre fight warm ups would prevent Shamrock from getting his crack at Slice, thus granting the biggest opportunity of Petruzelli's career.
The bell for the first round rang, and Slice immediately stalked across the ring looking to engage early. He was promptly met with a front kick, followed by a push kick, and a quick right hand that would immediately send him to the ground. Petruzelli quickly pounced on Kimbo throwing a multitude of right hands, most of which found their mark. Slice would roll to his back and in doing so he would be the recipient of 4 more devastating fight hands that would open up his face, prompting the referee to stop the fight.
Petruzelli quickly rose to his feet and ran around the ring in celebration, almost reminding me of what the faces looked like on the 1980 Olympic US hockey team when they beat the Russians. It was a huge victory for Seth Petruzelli, and one that he deserved very much.
After the fight, Petruzelli was very gracious and showed a lot of respect to Kimbo Slice telling the crowd that it's difficult to fight a guy that you did not train for. Slice on the other hand wasn't in the mood to answer any of the post fight questions. Slice thanked the crowd, and his opponent, and simply walked out of the cage and into the back.
Nobody is questioning the fact that Kimbo Slice is a tough guy. Nobody is questioning his heart, and nobody is questioning his warriors mentality. However, many in the MMA world have questioned his free ride to stardom. This fight clearly showed what can happen when someone is hyped up and offered a free market ride to the top. On Saturday night, a kid named Seth Petruzelli took a pin, and popped the balloon Saturday night.
