PACQUIAO CAMP PICTURES

PACQUIAO LOOKS EXPLOSIVE AT WILD CARD GYM By Brad Cooney

In what sounded like explosions was simply Manny Pacquiao's hands colliding off of Freddie Roach's mitts. Once Manny Pacquiao stepped into the ring today, the entire gym came to a stop and the fireworks began. If you ever heard someone take a baseball bat and crash it into the side of a garbage can, that is what it sounded like as Manny's hand collided with Freddie Roach's mitts. Roach and Manny went 11 rounds today in the ring and with each passing round, Pacquiao was more explosive. I asked Roach what his thoughts were on Manny's performance thus far, he replied, " Brad, Manny is hitting the mitts harder than he has ever done so before, I really feel his power."

Pacquiao skipped the heavybag today, Roach explained, " We went 11 rounds in the ring on the mitts today, so I told Manny that we would skip the heavybag, and get back on it on Monday."

It's early in the camp, but from what this writer can tell so far, Pacquiao looks pretty dangerous. A very focused Pacquiao will return to the gym on Monday, and the fireworks will start all over again.

WHILE 2007 WAS THE YEAR BOXING WAS LOOKING UP, 2008 IS THE YEAR TO LOOK AWAY! By Thornell Johnson

Well first and foremost I have to apologize to my man Brad Cooney for getting this article to him so late. My primary occupation has me quite occupied right now as I am a tax preparer and it is tax season. But looking at different boxing websites I am reading about a possible rematch between Oscar De La Hoya and Floyd Mayweather. While I was at first at a loss for words, the only word that did come to my mind was "Why"? Why put boxing fans thru another hypefest that doesnt live up to the hype? 2007 was the year of great and exciting fights. Floyd Mayweather who by some had a great year FINANCIALLY, is pretty much trying to rob boxing fans out of their money again by offering us a fight we dont want. While the welterweight division is stacked with worthy opponents and title holders, the so-called "champ" of the division has made it clear he wants no part in competitive fights. Wasnt this the same guy who said he was taking 2 years off possibly cause he was bored with boxing after disposing a too small for welterweight Ricky Hatton only to turn around and unretire to fight a past his prime De La Hoya? With three very tough title holders in Cintron, Williams, and Cotto (whom I will never bet against again in my life) being told they need to unify to get a shot at the P4P champ, Floyd lies to our face once again for a chance to make a quick and easy buck against a guy we know he can beat.

Enough about him. It is also rumored that Mike Tyson (whom I spent $1100 on tickets to see in his last professional fight in what I now refer to as his I-Quit match), has expressed interest in getting in the ring again and fighting Evander "Depends" Holyfield. And Holyfield has responded he would accept the fight. What is the world coming to? Mike Tyson is a quitter, and Holyfield is on a pointless quest to not only win one of the titles, but to unify. No respectable sanctioning body should let these 2 fight. This isnt PPV worthy, it is more Ringling Brothers worthy.

And then there is the Hopkins-Calzaghe fiasco. Now I am no fan of either of them. This fight should have happened a long time ago but it didnt. But can someone tell Bernard that he cant fill a lunchroom cafeteria let alone Yankee stadium? Someone has put something in his morning mush and it has made him delusional enough to make him think he is a draw. He tells Joe to take 50-50 and the contract hasn't been signed. I wonder why? Could Bernard be trying to "Roy Jones" Calzaghe into into entering an agreement that will pay both fighters 50-50 AFTER Golden Boy Promotions takes 20% off the top to promote the fight, of which Hopkins is a challenger? And why not go fight in Wales? The Euro is double the value of the US Dollar, and the gate would be more then anything Hopkins could imagine. No wonder Joe is waiting on the outcome of Jones-Trinidad. Roy Jones being the smart guy, knowing his market value isnt all that great, is willing to go and fight Joe on his turf. Bernard proposing a fight in Yankee Stadium is about as funny as Zab Judah getting knocked out by Kosta Tszyu.
