D-SOURCE TAKES A LOOK AT FREDDIE ROACH - By Dennis Guillermo

"If you're a slow dog, be careful."--Roach

If you saw ESPN's E:60 feature on Manny Pacquiao titled "Thrilla" Tuesday night, you probably know what I am talking about. Freddie Roach is quite the scene stealer- in a good way. Fresh from pulling a toy gun in their San Francisco press conference a couple of weeks ago, Freddie was back at his quick witted best. The topic was how Manny started as a boxer. Freddie said.
"First story I heard was Manny ran away from home because his dad ate his dog. That's just how poor it is in General Santos. If you're a slow dog, be careful."
LMFAO. To say it succinctly.

David Letterman could not have said it any better. I'm sure Freddie could easily be a stand-up comic or a comedy writer in another life. HOWEVER- and I meant to put it in all caps- this same quick witted line has some Jedi mind trick type of message about Pacquiao's upcoming fight against Oscar De la Hoya to it. Well at least to me it does. "If you're a slow dog, be careful." Yes Oscar De la Hoya, if you come in as a slow dog against Pacquiao, he will make azucena of you and eat you inside the bright lights of MGM grand.

(Oh, by the way, thank you Freddie for maintaining the stereotype that Filipinos eat dogs on primetime TV. Like I need a few more of my white and latino friends tell me they're not letting their dogs anywhere near me. Filipinos don't eat dogs. Just like how Americans don't eat squirrels. There may be some folks from the south that do but that don't make up a whole country. Trust me, you won't see dog chops and barbecued Chihuahuas on any fast food menu in the Philippines. Wink, wink. But for real though…)

Reports from the Pacquiao camp have all been positive. Everybody from Bob Arum to Joe the plumber have been raving about Pacquiao's training and how he's actually bulked up without losing his legendary speed. On the flip side, little has been published about De la Hoya's training camp from Big Bear California. For all we know Oscar may have very well just hired Usain Bolt to help him with his speed training. Speed kills. And like most, I believe speed will be the determining factor on December 6. If Oscar can keep up with Manny, Manny is in for a tough night. But if Oscar shows his age that night, I can't see how the fight can't end the way Pacquiao-Diaz did last June. Granted Oscar can pack the harder punch, but in the words of NBA great Kevin Johnson. "You can't beat what you can't catch."

Overall, I enjoyed ESPN's E:60 episode on Manny. If you watched the full version of the roundtable discussion over at ESPN's website you will notice how Jeremy Schaap crammed all the information he can about Manny in their discussion and at the end of the day, I give him props for doing a credible job in trying to capture Manny's persona. Michael Smith couldn't have been any more condescending *ehem ehem* douche bag *ehem ehem* even if he tried, but I guess it just speaks volumes about how the general public views boxing these days. When asked about what Manny accomplishes for taking a fight with De la Hoya, Schaap failed to point out though that Manny is stepping in the ring with a man way bigger than him. It's hard to overstate how big a challenge this is for Manny's career. Just ask all the naysayers and read up on all the reports that have pretty much dismissed this fight as an absolute mismatch. This is the type of fight the sport can market towards the Rocky underdog lovers out there.

Coming from an avid boxing fan, it's funny and sad at the same time, how clueless really a lot of people are about the game today. And it goes back to the very reason why I think it's wrong to say this fight is bad for boxing. Boxing needs all the publicity it could get right now. Thankfully, we are seeing current fighters on ESPN primetime again, albeit be once in a blue moon. Any real boxing fan that cares for the overall betterment of the sport should be rooting for this fight. It's our symbolic token presentation to the mainstream world that boxing still exists. Regardless of the result, we should all be pulling for a great match-up that can finally put boxing back on the map and generate more interest from the general public. Big fights like this are what inspire future Mike Tysons, Oscar De la Hoyas and Manny Pacquiaos just like how a game 7 on TNT between the Lakers and the Celtics inspire future Kobe Bryants and Kevin Garnetts. Didn't everybody say the New York Giants were going to be brutally murdered by the New England Patriots in the Superbowl last season? We all know how that went.

And I'm not saying Pacquiao should beat De la Hoya for the sport to get something out of this fight, but shame, let them play the games. To shoot it down and ridicule it before the fight even happens hurts the sport more than any of the reasons the same people say about how the fight is bad for boxing. That's why they play the games, and that's why you see underdogs beat favorites all the time in any sport. The most important fact in this matter is that this fight has the biggest appeal out of any other fight out there right now. Appeal, not in terms of boxing purists, stuck-ups, snubs and whatever ever have you. Appeal in terms of the general public and worldwide interest. Why shoot that down? Point blank period, when we get more bouts like this, boxing wins.

Im a Filipino Boxing Fan for almost 10 years, like any other boxing columnist and fanatics I also read a lot of comments and predictions especially with the upcoming mega fight bet our very own Manny Pacquiao and Oscar Delahoya. I would say im not really against this match up but I dont see any chances for Pacquiao to win this mega fight and here are my reasons.

1. Manny's punches won't hurt Oscar
as much as Oscar's punches would
hurt Manny in this 147 division.

2. Both fighters are good boxers
but Oscar has better defense
utilizing his jabs. and has
fought a lot of slick boxers
and more heavy handed opponent
in the heavier division.

3. One lethal counter left hook
from oscar might finish the
fight early.

4. Manny's extra 12 pounds might
slow him down in the middle
rounds (trust me on this one)

5. if Marquez can hurt Manny with
counter punches combinations.
what more can Oscar do.

6. Oscar is very serious and focus with his training that he even hired Nacho Beristain to help him with timing, counter punching and conditioning.

7. Manny doesn't move like Hopkins and Mayweather. Manny's movements are very predictable.

8 Oscar is very way far behind the caliber of David Diaz.

Im sorry guys but im very certain manny wont win this fight. it wont even become a close fight

I don’t believe ODLH can handle the power and speed of the PACMAN, his hand are likes of the Bruce Lee’s dragon fireballs. Both of his hands are equip with Power and Razor Blades, so if ODLH cannot cover his face, blood will tears. ODLH should watch his 3 angles when the firing blades are start flying from a little NIJA!

if manny can survive within 6 rounds he might have the chance to last 12 rounds he has superb conditioning and
stamina but for sure oscar will dominate most of the rounds. it wont take a while before manny receive a bad cut from oscar's stiff jabs. Manny will connect flurry of punches but Oscar will land harder and solid punches. Oscar might become slower from rounds 5-8 but will be able to come back in the last 4 rounds, even
if manny tries to dig into oscar's mid secion and tries to get out of oscar's range he'll get hit and oscar has a strong super welterweight body. remember cotto's
fight with margarito he mentioned he thought it would be easier for him to connect body shots but during the fight he was unsuccessful. for me cotto is a better boxer compared to manny. after this fight i think Manny will certainly move back to 135 lightweight division.

Timing can neutralize speed. Oscar doesn't throw so many punches he usually use his jabs to setup combinations. he has good defensive skills using his arms and jabs rather than head and body movements. Manny cannot outbox him the same way he did to David Diaz, Oscar is a smart fighter guys..

I expect Oscar to win via 5th round brutal Knockout

I spoke with Ronnie Shields (trainer) the other day, and he's predicting an Oscar De La Hoya victory.

pacquiao will cut oscar bcoz of his blinding speed and i think the ref. will have 2 stop the fight in 9th rd.

i dont think Pacmans hand and foot speed is far enough from Oscar..and i dont even think Pacman can handle a punch from a big guy like oscar..he can run and switch to an angle but can he esbtalish a good punch to hurt oscar? what if oscar land a strong jab and a left hook combination,,,it might be a brutal end for Pacman..oscar is a quality fighter who have been tested from a big battle even against a bigger guy..if Pacman run to avoid oscar, what will happen to the big night?is it a marathon..he need to come in to set a punch, but if he miss, then it would be a brutal end for the Filipino ring icon..

same analysis with jigger rojo. I really dont know why they keep on
comparing Oscar to David Diaz hehe. they keep on saying that Manny will wear down Oscar and finish him in the
9th round looks like an easy night for Manny isnt it. and as for Roach I
really dont know why he keeps on saying that oscar can no longer pull the trigger based on Oscar's fight against Steve Forbes. Have you seen the fight round by round analysis. have u seen the cut over the eye of Steve Forbes and how many times did Forbes clinch just to avoid oscar's punches and survive 12 rounds. As for Forbes he really had some success landing few punches into oscar's face but Oscar was never hurt in that fight. Forbes punches are totally far with Manny's puches but over all they are completely different fighters. Forbes is an average defensive fighter with less power campared to Manny but still Oscar managed to land good combinations that hurt Forbes and won convincingly. As for roach if he's not convince with
the outcome and think that Oscar can no longer pull the trigger then
he must also convince that ANDRE BERTO won 23 (KO 19) + lost 0 (FUTURE THREAT TO 147 DIVISION) can also no longer pull the trigger since he didnt KO Forbes last month. Manny will face a former SIX TIMES DIVISION CHAMPION who has fought the best in the last decade. a 1992 Gold Olympic Medalist, A knockout Artist with underrated defensive skills and counter punching style. A 36 yrs old but still has a strong super welterweight body. he is not a
bigger version of David Diaz and should not be compare with Rashad Halloway. (Manny's sparring partner)

Blah! blah! blah! blah! all those predictions will be answered on Dec 06. almost the same predictions came up a couple of years ago when the unknown Pacquiao fought Barrera and you know what happen? Pacquiao shocked the world. mark my word, He will do the same on this fight.

maybe against juan diaz, nate campbell, or kid diamond. Manny should have fought and learned wid some of the best slick and defensive boxers first (Raheem, Guzman, etc.) then move first to 140 welterweight division instead of going up directly
to 147.those guys in the 147 division (Cotto,Margarito, Berto, etc.) they can all destroy Manny.
