America's Last Heavyweight Champion Speaks
I am Shannon "The Cannon" Briggs 2 Time Heavyweight Champion of the World. The only fighter in the History of Boxing to become Heavyweight Champion with asthma. What makes this significant, is the nature of boxing. I can not call time out and another fighter enters the ring while I adjust and get myself together when I suffer a asthma attack during a Championship fight. No, I do my best to protect myself at all times while trying to breathe.
No other fighter in the rich History of boxing has had to deal with fighting his opponent and fighting to breathe in the ring. Every time I walk into the ring I walk in with a severe handicap. A handicap that robs me of our most basic right, the right to breathe. No other fighter has asthma and achieved what I have achieved. No disrespect to Mike Tyson, Muhammad Ali or Sugar Ray Robinson who are great fighters, but they didn't have asthma and win the Greatest Title on Earth, the Heavyweight Championship. Shannon Briggs did. Twice I did it and I will do it again.
Shannon "The Cannon" Briggs is America's last Heavyweight Champion of the World. This title belongs to foreigners as we speak. America has fallen out of grace from the World's most coveted title. The Heavyweight division has been dominated by American fighters since the beginning of boxing. Now it has been kidnapped from "home".
But let us take a closer look at the sequence of events that developed before, during and after these events stated above. Prior to fighting Serguei Lyakhovich, I wanted to fight Vladimir Clit-Scho, the supposedly champ. I call him the guy who's babysitting my belts. I did everything within the law to fight this guy. I have the video to attest to this. I called him out, I offered him and his team big money to fight me. But Clit-Scho has proven to me and my team he can duck, boy he can duck good. Clit-scho has repeatedly avoided any and all fight talk about or with Shannon Briggs his whole career. What Champion of the World refuses to defend the Title against the best competition out there? I'll tell what kind of champion, a coward. Clit-Scho is this coward. He does not deserve to be mentioned in the same sentence as the word Champion. Boy I wanna kick his ass.
After many months of trying to fight this Clit-guy and obviously to no avail. I was offered another Russian. Serguei Lyakhovich the WBO Champion. Because I wanted to fight Clit-Scho so bad and he avoided me, I decided to take all my frustration out on his russian brother Serguei. I knew going in this fight I would not only beat him but I was gonna knock him out. If you view the first round of this fight I had him about to go nite nite. My adrenaline was pumping and blood flowing thru my veins at the sight of this guy about to go sleep. There is no other satisfaction on my job than to see the guy opposite me in the ring in this position. Then "it" happened. I caught a asthma attack.
I can try to explain the effects asthma has on the human body during an attack but my opponents will be reading this too. Can't give them any clues on anything. Asthmatics know the difficulties one has during an attack. The mental and physical implications asthma attacks cause are nothing short of life threatening and then you still have a 200 plus pound man trying to knock your head off to deal with.
I made out of the first round with Serguei, he was hurt physically, I was hurt mentally. When I sat on the stool after round one, I looked up and whispered "You fucked me again God". To say I was upset would be a understatement. I had promised Serguei I would knock him out and I had him in round one. Fucking asthma. I never got myself back to normal during that fight. Never.
This fight with Serguei went 12 rounds and with 2:59 left in the 12th round I knocked him through the ropes and out cold onto the score table. Shannon Briggs and America had finally become Heavyweight Champion of the World again. But there was another soft weak chinned russian out there that needed to be dealt with, Clit-Scho.
I had the WBO Heavyweight Championship belt and I let Clit-Scho know it. Every chance I got. I started my verbal assaults again, everywhere he went. I said to him the Heavyweight division needs a unified Champion. We need to fight!!! I wrote it. I screamed it. I lived it. This fucking guy is no Champion.
So I have the WBO Championship Belt and Clit-scho wont fight me. Fucking punk. Now there is talk of another undefeated russian who "they" want me to fight. I don't give a shit, line'em up was and is my attitude. I'm from Brownsville, Brooklyn New York, we don't back down from fighting. It's what we do. It's what we're extremely good at. So you got a guy who wants to step in the ring with me? My only comment, make sure his life insurance is up to date. Especially them fucking russians.
Now I'm at home in South Florida training for this fight with Ibragimov. While out running one evening, I run into a huge wild fire burning and the smoke is intense. I run as fast as I could to get away from the smoke which has consume the entire neighborhood. The smoke moved so fast over the area I couldn't avoid it. My lungs felt as if I had swallowed buckets of water. Mentally, the feeling was like I was holding my breathe underwater and I needed to come up for air. But I wasn't underwater, I was on my knees on the side of the road. The smoke had triggered my asthma and I couldn't breathe.
This happened about 3 weeks prior to fight night. My lungs were in bad shape. I was taken to 6 different doctors. 4 of these doctors were from the commission side, not my personal doctors. These doctors all said not only shouldn't I fight or train at the time but I needed at least 6 months to a year to repair the torn lung tissue and pneumonia I had. But threaten by boxing commissions of being stripped of my Title for not defending it and bamboozled by associates on every side. This other russian Oleg Maskev hadn't fought in 15 months and he remained WBA Heavyweight Champion. No talk of stripping him for not defending his WBA Title.
Anyway, I fought this guy Sultan Ibragimov. No training, no preparation. I went 12 rounds with 20 percent lung capacity and lost by decision. America lost her only Heavyweight Champion in a fight that shouldn't of been fought according to no less than 6 doctors.
Now here is where it gets really interesting. Now I'm no longer Heavyweight Champion, Vlaldamir Clit-Scho says he wants to unify the titles!
This fucking guy decides when I lose the WBO Title that he should unify all the belts? I had been screaming and living this for months! This guy has a great ass whooping from me if this coward ever gets in the ring with me. And by the looks of his defense against Sultan Ibragimov recently, this is gonna be a piece of cake. Am I the only one who thinks that Ibragimov vs. Clit-scho was the worst fight in years. This fucking guy is killing our sport. Fucking little bitch.
But thats not the least of it. Check this out. Remember Serguei? Who I knocked out the ring and out cold? Well he gets a Title eliminator shot before Shannon Briggs! He gets a shot at a Title fight before me and his last fight ended up on the score table outside the ring dazed, confused and defeated.
Guess who else is in the talks for a title fight? The other Clit-Scho. That's right Vitali Clit-Scho, who hasn't fought in 4 years, he gets a Title shot before Shannon Briggs. What the hell is this about? America deserves better than this. America doesn't deserve to fight for the Heavyweight Title? That's what they're implying. I have been involved in boxing for 26 years and this current atmosphere is the most anti-American I have ever seen. Something needs to be done and I am the someone to do it.
Recently, Maskev lost his WBA Title to a African from Nigeria named Sam Peter. I call him Sam "Cheater". This guy hits in the back of the head so regularly it's become normal for him. I need to punish him too. He's also listed at 25 years old, I've done a investigation report on him, he's actually 36 or 37. You know Africans don't have proper birth certificates and/or paperwork and he wants to be viewed as a young dynamic fighter. I'm not buying it Sam "Cheater" and I'm exposing all your hypocrisy. Fucking punk. I want him too but not as bad as Clit-Scho. But maybe I get Sam "Cheater's" belt and lure Clit-Scho to the ring with it, since he "wants to unify the Titles".
Listen, I wanna kick some ass. It's what I do. I deserve a Title fight. I will win a Title fight. I'm writing my story to you guys who cover boxing and report the sport's news and information. I know I'm not as eloquent as you guys but I'm hoping and praying you all post this on your websites and/or talk shows. America has a right to be represented in the quest for the greatest Title on Earth. The current Title holders are just that, holding my Titles.
